  1. NCSA Mosaic for the Macintosh 2.0.0 ALPHA2

  3. The Alpha 2 version of NCSA Mosaic for the Macintosh 2.0 was 
  4. released Wednesday, June 22, 1994.   
  5.  
  6. This is an ALPHA release, therefore there are many new features or 
  7. bugs that you will need to be aware of to make your use of the new 
  8. release a pleasant experience.  You may encounter problems that 
  9. will cause your machine to crash. You may not find certain aspects 
  10. of the program aesthetically pleasing,  and the program will trash 
  11. your current preferences.

  15. Please make a copy of your 1.0.3 preferences file (Mosaic 
  16. Preferences) before using the alpha version.

  19. We will continue to keep the comprehensive Known Bugs page as up-
  20. to-date as possible .  To help us do this, please email us with any 
  21. problems you find that are not related to those listed on the known

  31. HOW TO GET NCSA MOSAIC

  33. NCSA Mosaic is available via anonymous ftp.  Please enter 
  34. 'anonymous' as
  35. the name and your complete email address as the password.

  40. The NCSA ftp server is being overloaded with requests for the Mosaic
  41. software. Because of this, you may get an error message.  Please wait

  65. DECOMPRESSING THE ARCHIVE
  66. -------------------------------
  67. To UnStuff & UnBinHex NCSA Mosaic we recommend that you use
  68. StuffIt Expander.  The expander is available at ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu and 
  69. other ftp sites.  To unbinhex StuffIt Expander you will also need 
  70. binhex.macbinary (which can be found in /Mac/Utilities at 
  71. ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu).

  82. Pagination is much cleaner
  83. FORMS - fixed
  84. Download speed is improved.  With Auto Load Images turned on, the 
  85. images are downloaded before anything is displayed.  This should be 
  86. fixed in a future release.
  87. Jumping to named anchors works
  88. Email addresses no longer get scrambled in the preferences file
  89. Style of first line of normal text no longer changes upon resize
  90. Fixed bug related to Mosaic not allowing subsequent links after an 
  91. initial one failed

  95. Pop up menus have been fixed, however, clicking on the right hand

  108. If you hold down option while Mosaic is starting up, it will bring up a
  109. standard open file dialog box for a document to open from the local 
  110. disk
  111. instead of the default home page.

  118. Save As...HTML is still broken
  119. text files are not displayed properly 
  120. Printing bugs still exist (only one page will print, grayscale option 
  121. causes printout to be 1/2 gray)
  122. Still not handling out-of-memory properly
  123. Styles dialog is still too big for smaller screens.
  124. Speech recognition has been turned off until Apple releases 1.2.1 of 
  125. the speech recognition extension.
  126. Search box is still gone
  127. IsMap is still not mapping correctly
  128. Canceling has been temporarily disabled.

  166. Open URL:  Mosaic now remembers last URL entered into the Open 
  167. URL window

  171. Use This URL for Home: Allows you to select the current document to 
  172. be used as the new home page.  This is automatically saved in the 
  173. preferences file.
  174. Use Header Mode: This feature allows you to get additional 
  175. information about a link without causing you to connect to that link.   
  176. The information, which includes: file type, modification date, file size, 
  177. and server information, appears in a separate window.
  178. There are two ways to access it:  1) Through the Options Menu, turn 
  179. Use Header Mode on, then click on a link to get the information.  2)  
  180. When Use Header Mode is off, command-click on a link to access the 
  181. same information.

  183. Preferences

  185. The preferences window has been completely rewritten to make it 
  186. easier to modify.   
  187. The preferences dialog has been divided into a series of functional 
  188. categories.  These include:  Miscellaneous, Links, Directories, Gates.  
  189. (more to be added later)
  190. Background Color:   now user modifiable
  191. Global History List:  Mosaic now maintains a history of links between 
  192. sessions.  The user can determine the number of entries that may be 
  193. included in the Global History, or they may choose to remove files 
  194. from the Global History that are older than 'n' days.  
  195. Link Colors:  Visited link colors fade to the unvisited link colors as 
  196. they mature. This may be turned on or off as desired.
  197. Set Hotlist Directory:  Set this to a folder that contains your hotlists 
  198. and all hotlists will be readily available in the new hotlist window.  
  199. No need to load each one individually!
  200. FIREWALL:  You can set Mosaic to use CERN Proxy Service or SOCKS 
  201. service!

  203. Styles:  The styles window has been completely rewritten to make it 
  204. easier to use.

  209. Speech Recognition: This has been implemented and will be available 
  210. as soon as Apple releases their Speech Recognition extension.  This 
  211. feature has not been turned on in this alpha release.
